In 1885, J.C. Hoyt & Co. (what would later be known as ICI Insurance) started providing insurance services to El Dorado, Kansas. Forty years later, in 1925, J.C. Hoyt & Co. acquired the Bersie Agency, and two years later, J.C. Hoyt & Co. acquired W.R. Childs. In 1938, Bacon Insurance, a company that would later be included in a merger, was established.
During the 1950s, J.C. Hoyt & Co. acquired the Clint Mossman Agency. During the 1960s, numerous insurance companies were acquired, including the Ray L. Smith Companies (1962), Stearns Agency (1964), Safety Insurance (1966), Ellsworth Jordan Agency (1967) and Viola Ernest Agency (1967). In 1970, the Mannion Insurance Agency and Carter Insurance were acquired, and two years later, in 1972, the Fullinwider Agency was acquired.
In 1982, Tom Murry joined the organization and has since been credited with much of the growth. An immigrant from Ireland, he completed the prestigious Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) program, the Life Underwriters Training Counsel (LUTC) and served in numerous roles, including the president of the Kansas Association of Insurance Agents (KAIA). In 1982, J.C. Hoyt & Co. merged with Bacon Insurance to form Insurance Center, Inc.
Tom Murry was the president of ICI until 2015, at which point his son, Ryan T. Murry, became the president. In 2017, ICI acquired the Insurance Specialists Group and expanded into Garden City with a new office. One year later, ICI acquired Z Insurance Group. In 2019, Madrigal and Associates was acquired, the Emporia office was remodeled, and the Wichita offices were consolidated into one location.
In 2020, the ICI office in Derby moved into a new location. In 2022, ICI partnered with Wood-Dulohery Insurance to operate as Wood Insurance Center LLC (WIC) in Parsons and Pittsburg, Kansas.
